Planning Your Film

You have decided to make a video… now what? The planning process is very important to the success of your film. Without proper pre-production, the filming and editing process can be difficult. Here are some pointers to get you going:

  1. Idea

All films start with an idea. Create a film about something that inspires you.

  2. Develop the Idea into a Concept

This is where you or your group brainstorm all sorts of ways to turn your idea into a real product. For example, you want to share the harmful effects of smoking. How would you convey that? Filter through all the possibilities and come up with an outline of what your film will show.

  3. Planning

You have a concept and now you need to plan it out! Some questions to consider:

    • What is the purpose of my project - to entertain or inform?
    • Who is my audience - kids, adults or a specific group of people?
    • What is the best format for my concept - talk show, interviews, performance, slideshow?
    • What is the category of the film - documentary, personal narrative or public service announcement (PSA)?
    • Will you create a script or storyboard to help you envision all the shots you want to film?

  4. Logistics & Cost

This is when you need to consider all the “stuff” you need to make your film successful. Actors, equipment, props, locations, music, photos and/or facilities should be searched for and costs established. The Fresno County Superintendent of Schools has limited quantities of technology kits that include everything you need to film & edit video for (add: a two week check out.) a 30 day check out.

  5. Timeline

Creating a realistic timeline of your project is imperative. Deciding when you will write the script, interview subjects, shoot film and edit the final project should be evaluated before ever picking up the camera.

  6. Credits and Copyright

Did your film include interviews, data, photos or music? If so, they need to be properly cited to avoid copyright infringement and disqualification.
